SOAR - Staff Outstanding Achievement and Recognition Awards Fall 2007

Academic Technology and User Services Special Project Team:

John Curtis, Academic Technology Specialist

Scott Ryan, AV Equipment Coordinator

Tony Alberti, Student Worker

Hector DeLeon, Student Worker

John, Scott, Tony and Hector are being recognized for their work in recycling old computers and making the college a greener workplace. Each year, the college accumulates computers that are too old and inadequate for college use, and eventually, they are discarded. This year, John, Scott, Tony and Hector worked to recycle the old computers rather than sending them to a landfill. With some 240 systems no longer usable, they

  • re-imaged all the computers by eliminating CLC image and information;
  • divided the systems into those that worked and those that could not be repaired, and organized the computers by the type of system
  • separated the various parts of the computers and packaged them.

The computers were then sold to a company that would re-use some of them and recycle the rest. This not only helped the college earn a modest amount of money but also enabled us to be a "greener" workplace. This process will be used in the future so that discarded CLC computers will no longer add to the area's landfill.

Julie Britten, Library Technology Specialist

Julie is being recognized for her work in redesigning the art gallery Website.

According to her nominator, "Julie began the process months ago by listening carefully to what was most important to us. She patiently gathered data, content, and images, and wove all of our ideas into a beautiful product we are very proud of." Julie had an amazing ability to keep the technology language on a level that would not confuse or frustrate us. That allowed us to stay focused on the task of building web pages that are not only informative, but easy to navigate, educational, and quite frankly, stunningly beautiful."

"Thanks to Julie's suggestion, we now have an iPod that we use at gallery functions and can record artists talking about their work. Julie takes those comments and converts them into PodCasts for our website, pairing them with the artwork being described.

She has encouraged us to eventually put more of the permanent art collection online with the PodCast accompaniment. This idea will extend the walls of our gallery and give us a cutting edge presence as a community college. Julie has given us something we never dreamed of achieving."

While they cross-train to better meet the needs of those they serve, each one of them has their own special niche and area of expertise." On average, Career and Placement Services serves more than 1,000 individuals each month. Many seek specific employment related services; others are students looking for ways to combine their academics with career goals. Staff and faculty in Career and Placement Services work as a team to assist every person with his or her needs, whether it be career counseling, interview assistance, service learning, student employment, or help with job web sites. The nominator described staff members as knowledgeable, reliable, resourceful, caring, and committed to service. The nominator wrote, "the success of the department depends upon customer satisfaction and actual measurable outcome. They track outcome in a multitude of ways and regularly discuss findings and develop strategies to better themselves." Last year, the career and placement services organized a very successful Make a Difference Day, the largest national service day. More than 150 volunteers participated in the event, and the college was selected as the local honoree by the Daily Herald and received an award of $500. Their nominator stated, "They make a difference in someone's life, every day!"

The child care center staff members are being recognized for their work in receiving accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children for the sixth time. This accreditation, which is valid for 5 years, involves a comprehensive self-study and improvement commitment by Sandy and her staff to meet 10 Early Childhood Program Standards. The accreditation validates the excellence of the program

and its staff. Their nominator wrote, "Sandy and her staff realize the critical importance of the beginning years of every child. They bring professional training in early childhood education and nurturing approach to the teaching environment. Parents have come to trust the competence of Sandy and these trained and caring teachers to provide optimal learning experiences to their children. They work hard each and every day to bring joy and laughter, experience and understanding to each child at the Center. The accreditation validates their program. I applaud their valued service to the children, their parents and families, our College, and our community."

Cecilia McKenzie, Work Study Coordinator, Career and Placement Services

Cecilia is being recognized for making a difference in the student work study program. Since the Career and Placement Services started administering the hiring of student workers a year ago, Cecilia is credited with improving the student employment process.

According to her nominator, the current process is quicker and 100% better. The nominator wrote, "I know there were many management decisions that made the system work better, but knowledgeable, dedicated people like Cecilia are the other reason the student worker program has improved so much." She truly cares about students and wants to make a difference and place each and every one of them successfully. She remembers not only names but the personal circumstances in the students' lives. In short, she really gives her all to the position."

Russ Pearson, Coordinator of Course Management Systems and Training

Russ is being recognized for his willingness to always help staff, in particular, with his knowledge of Blackboard. Russ is considered the "guru" of Blackboard at CLC.

As such, he knows everything about it. His nominator wrote, "Russ answers any question pleasantly, respectfully, and completely, no matter how many times you ask.

He is always available to help; when he does not know something, he will investigate it.

I am still struggling to learn Blackboard, but I believe with Russ' help, I know

I am going to be successful."

Marla Sheade, Math Center Specialist

Marla is being recognized for her work with students during Math Center orientations.

Her nominator wrote, "Marla cheerfully conducts Math Center orientations for students when teachers bring their students to the Math Center ." Many times I watch as students listen to the orientation and say to their neighbor, 'I'm coming down here today!' Students are excited to learn that there is free tutoring available to them, twelve hours a day, with no appointment needed. Every semester the number of students who receive tutoring grows. I know this is in large part because Marla runs such a welcoming place to learn, especially for students who think that Math is beyond their ability to learn."

Workforce and Professional Development Institute Secretarial Staff members:

Connie Grider, Senior Secretary

Pat Graham, Senior Secretary

Tammi Hilsenbeck, Senior Secretary

Barb Hensel, Senior Secretary

Amy Glover (Amy was part of this dept. during the nomination period; now she works in Student Life.)

They are being recognized for their excellent work in implementing a customer service center model in the Workforce and Professional Development Institute. After the Institute was created in December 2006, the Customer Service Design Team was formed to implement a customer service center model. According to the nominator, this was a stressful time as staff and jobs were realigned to form the new unit. "Each one has gone above and beyond their job responsibilities to meet the goals of the design team. They were able to maintain their current job responsibilities during the design and transition process and continued to serve internal and external customer needs."The design team was charged with creating consistent processes and procedures, a new work space, and a phone call center model. Each secretary came from a different department and was tasked to produce a procedure manual for their previous job duties.

Once completed these were used to realign job duties and consolidate processes across the department. They were responsive to the necessity to move quickly and deliver a finished product by April 2007. In July, the office areas were re-fitted and the automated call center was implemented. They have far surpassed the expectations. Each has taken initiative and at times negotiated solutions to provide the best model possible."
