Online Course Development
The College of Lake County is one of the leaders in the state for online course development. The Professional Development Center works very closely with faculty to assist with the instructional design of online courses and to help faculty learn techniques for teaching with the Internet. Additionally, the PDC supports faculty by offering assistance with Blackboard, our course management system.
CLC Resources for Online Course Development
External Resources for Online Course Development
- The Illinois Online Network (ION) also provides a wealth of resources related to online teaching and learning. ION is a collaboration of forty-eight community colleges and the University of Illinois working together to advance utilization of Internet-based instruction and service throughout the state of Illinois. The primary mission of the Illinois Online Network is to promote the effective use of networked information technologies to enhance traditional classroom instruction, and to build the foundation for developing, delivering, and supporting courses delivered in a completely online format. See their link for “Online Education Resources” for a listing of their articles, handouts and web links.
- JALN –The Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks The Journal is now a major resource for knowledge about online learning. Our mission is to provide practitioners in online education with knowledge about the very best research in online learning.
- ILCCO Newsletter ILCCO provides a key statewide voice for community colleges for online education. Shifts in the state over the last two years, largely due to economic factors, have diminished the voice of community colleges in distance learning and technology. This quarterly newsletter will provide relevant articles to community college faculty and staff in the area of online course instruction.
Non-CLC Workshops & Classes
In addition to workshops and courses available through the Professional Development Center, there are a number of other professional development opportunities throughout the state and the country. Some external courses may offer CEU credit. The College of Lake County may be willing to transfer that credit upon approval from Educational Affairs. Please contact the Professional Development Center for more information about upcoming Non-CLC Classes & Workshops.
Here are some other possibilities to explore:
- Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality - The Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) series of online faculty development courses is designed to help faculty members acquire skills and knowledge needed to teach online and to help staff and administration support online education. These courses are available for CEUs and for graduate credit. By taking a series of these courses, you may also earn a Master Online Teacher certificate.
- DICE—Database for Innovative Course Exchange - Illinois Community Colleges Online’s (ILCCO) Faculty Development Subcommittee has recently developed DICE, the Database for Innovative Course Exchange. DICE is a tool to foster collaboration among all the colleges in Illinois. Raising awareness of, and sharing opportunities for faculty development initiatives at Illinois community colleges, allows colleges to better prepare faculty. Use DICE to explore faculty development opportunities available at other community colleges. If there is a particular topic you would like to see offered here at CLC, please let us know!
- CAFDN - Chicago Area Faculty Development Network - The Chicago Area Faculty Development Network (CAFDN) is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to supporting the work of teaching by providing affordable workshops for college faculty, faculty developers, and academic administrators. Each fall, CAFDN sponsors a one-day "Perfecting the Craft" workshop that addresses current issues in college teaching. Each spring, CAFDN sponsors a free one-day workshop with nationally known speakers for faculty developers, administrators, and faculty who work as mentors or in teaching centers at their institutions.
