This session is designed for faculty, deans, and others who want to learn the basic concepts of assessment. We will discuss the purposes and principles of assessment, and the benefits and challenges of implementing assessment processes. Assessment at the class level, the program level, and the institutional level will be introduced, including the assessment of general education learning outcomes, transfer discipline assessment, and career program assessment. In addition, the specific steps in assessment, examples of measures that might be used, and how to build assessment on existing grading processes will be emphasized. At its most basic, the goal of assessment is the improvement of student learning - come learn how assessment can benefit your students. This session draws upon Barbara E. Walvoord’s book, "Assessment Clear and Simple: A Practical Guide for Institutions, Departments and General Education".
